GOAL: To develop team building skills and study what constitutes a "good" team.

Team Selection

A team selection procedure can produce intersting results.

Give each student a confidentail identifier (eg. a letter or number), and a piece of paper (or prepared form). On one side ask them to list what they think are their strengths, their interests, what they can bring to the team; ask them also to consider their weaknesses, and to write these on the other side. Each form to be identified only by the confidential identifier. The forms are collected in, and given to another group, the assessors, who have to create teams of up to 6, based on the information on the forms. Some surprises may be in store! The assessors have to understand that they are not making judgements about individuals, merely looking at how successfully each team would work together in an enclosed space. From this point, the teams can be given specific hour-long tasks to perform, in isolation from the other teams, and the respective outcomes evaluated, as well as intra-team performance.

Teams should learn that exact matching of qualities within a group may seem to offer the most efficient method of problem-solving, but often ideas spring from unlikely mixes of abilities and attitudes, and this variety should be encouraged.
